Pastel Sunset

Sullivan's Island, South Carolina
September 16, 2016 by Matt Spangard

Charleston is blessed with some of the best sunsets. This one wasn't so much fiery as it was pastel. The sky was subtle as it turned everything below into gold as it sank behind downtown Charleston on the horizon. This beach is on Sullivan's Island, right next to Fort Moultrie and overlooking Charleston Harbor, Fort Sumter, the Ravenel Bridge and downtown.

This photograph was captured with a Sony a6300.

Sullivan's Island Shrimper

Sullivan's Island, South Carolina
August 26, 2016 by Matt Spangard

This guy knows what it's all about. Taking it easy while shrimping on Sullivan's Island as the sun sets into the water is a really, really good place to be.

I'm starting to miss summer already and it's still here.

Edit: the good people of Reddit tell me that it's more likely he's using a cast net to catch bait fish than shrimp given his location on the beach. Thanks r/Charleston!

Vickery's

Mount Pleasant, South Carolina
June 18, 2016 by Matt Spangard

Vickery's is a great waterfront bar and restaurant on Shem Creek in Mount Pleasant. Every trip we take to Charleston always starts with lunch at either Vickery's or Poe's Tavern on Sullivan's Island. If you go in the early afternoon, you are almost guaranteed to see a few dolphins playing along the creek. The dock has been newly renovated and now connects in a loop with the boardwalk over the marsh, which makes for a fun walk after lunch.

This photograph was captured with a DJI Phantom 3 Professional drone.

Ravenel Bridge

Charleston, South Carolina
December 30, 2015 by Matt Spangard

There's the Old Bridge. There's the New Bridge. And then there's the Ravenel Bridge. All three have moved me in different ways over the years. The Old Bridge moved me by fear. The New Bridge moved me by the excitement of what lay ahead. The Ravenel Bridge moves me by beauty. I've never traversed it without a giant smile on my face.

This panorama was captured from the deck of the USS Yorktown with a Sony NEX-7.
