Oz-Bound Defender

Biltmore, North Carolina
February 08, 2017 by Matt Spangard

An Aussie couple called this Land Rover home at Overland Expo. They were on a journey half-way across the globe, taking it to their native Australia. The kids loved visiting with them and their dogs. If you ask the kids, their favorite feature on this tremendous camper was the gearshift knob that held a redback spider, suspended inside a ball of resin.

Hidden Yellow Brick Road

Beech Mountain, North Carolina
January 22, 2017 by Matt Spangard

We headed to the mountains this weekend to escape the post-inauguration craziness. On the slopes, nobody wants to bore you with politics.

The backside of Beech Mountain Resort is called Oz. As you head over from the summit to Oz Run, you can catch a glimpse of the yellow brick road from the Land of Oz, the only Wizard of Oz theme park in the world. Despite what Vice tells you on Facebook, the park is not abandoned. It is open on select weekends in the summer, every year in the fall during Autumn at Oz and best of all — it's always open to private tours with a little planning.

If you want to check out Beech Mountain Resort for some skiing or the Land of Oz for a little adventure, check out our Beech Mountain chalet, Slopeside.

Mile High Farm

Beech Mountain, North Carolina
November 26, 2016 by Matt Spangard

This farm on top of Beech Mountain isn't just any farm — it's Dorothy's farm from the Wizard of Oz-themed amusement park, Land of Oz. At more than a mile in elevation and perched atop a mountain, it just might be the most picturesque setting for any amusement park in the world.

Follow the Yellow Brick Road

Beech Mountain, North Carolina
October 14, 2016 by Matt Spangard

The Land of Oz opened in 1970 as a Wizard of Oz-themed amusement park on top of Beech Mountain. It closed in 1980 but that didn't keep the "cast members" from returning for a reunion every fall. There has been a resurgence of interest in The Land of Oz in the last few years and in addition to being open for one weekend every fall, it is now open on select weekends over the summer and you can even hire private tours of Oz for parties.
