The Grove Park Inn has been home to many famous guests over the past century, including ten US presidents. The most fascinating to me, however, is F. Scott Fitzgerald, who stayed in rooms 441 and 443 for two summers in a row, drinking his life away and chasing socialites as his wife steadily lost her sanity at a nearby asylum. In the ultimate case of life imitating art, F. Scott Fitzgerald became a character ripped from the pages of his own generation-defining novels. Ultimately, Fitzgerald left Asheville for Hollywood to become a screenwriter to pay for his lavish lifestyle. He only lasted two years in Hollywood... and on this earth.
If you ever have the opportunity to stay at the Grove Park Inn, request to be placed in the Old Building above the grand lobby. Better yet, see if you can get one of Fitzgerald's rooms. They're not nearly as nicely appointed as the new wings and Fitzgerald's rooms overlook the carpark rather than the mountains (rumor has it he requested the view so he could scope out prospective conquests as they arrived at the hotel) but they take you straight back to the jazz era as you walk in the footsteps of the giants who came before you.
Whatever you do, though, don't stay in room 545 unless you want to share it with the Grove Park Inn's resident ghost, the Pink Lady.

Here's a view of Charlotte's Bechtler Museum of Modern Art from a slightly different perspective. It really showcases the museum's unique supported design and textured brick façade. Every time I pass the Bechtler, I can't help but think of it as a giant LEGO set!

Nearly 4,000 B-29s were built from 1943-1946 at a cost of $640,000. Two of the most defining moments — for better or worse — of WWII were carried out by B-29s as they dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. This example sits at the excellent aviation museum at Robins AFB.

"Hey look kids! Big Ben! Parliament!" It's almost surreal the first time you see them, poised perfectly along the Thames.

The baobab tree may be one of the most important trees in the world. It provides water, sustenance and shelter in even the most harsh conditions from Madagascar to Australia.
It's also fittingly known as the "Tree of Life." Each tree holds hundreds of liters of water that can be tapped and produces a fruit the size of a coconut called monkey bread. Mature trees even have hollow trunks, providing shelter from the elements for both animals and people. In fact, there are even several pubs and shops built right into baobab trees.
Because this is Disney's version of a baobab. I have a sneaking suspicion this might be a very good reproduction. I guess I need to book a trip to Africa or Australia to make sure the next one I see is the real deal. Hopefully, I can find one that doubles as a pub.

The sunrises and sunsets on Beech Mountain never fail to amaze me. I need to start setting the tripod up before going to bed because I miss more of them than I catch.

This single block on Middle Street on Sullivan's Island has some of the best food on the planet. Step onto the patio at Poes or Home Team BBQ and life instantly slows down and gets very, very easy. The views aren't too bad, either!
