Peaceful Japanese Garden

Japan Pavilion
August 06, 2017 by Matt Spangard

This peaceful Japanese garden sits behind a replica of the coronation and ceremonial halls of Japan's Imperial Palace. The building is home to the Mitsukoshi Department Store. The entrance to the busy "shopping mall" of the Japan Pavilion is on the other side. This side, however, is reserved for a peaceful bonsai garden. The Disney Imagineers do such a great job of making the most of all of the structures in Epcot's World Showcase.

This photograph was captured with a Sony a6300.

South Carolina Riverbanks

Riverbanks Zoo & Garden
March 26, 2017 by Matt Spangard

There's a bridge that separates the SC Riverbanks Zoo from the Botanical Gardens. It feels like you are going on an adventure over the river and into the forest as you traverse the two connected parks.

As we walked over the bridge, we watched a cormorant diving for fish. He would swim underwater for 30 seconds to a minute with each dive. It seemed like he was part bird, part river otter.

This photograph was captured with a Sony a6300.

South Battery Street

Charleston, South Carolina
February 11, 2017 by Matt Spangard

The homes on Charleston's famed Battery — also known as White Point Garden — are spectacular from the ground and a sight many are very familiar with. I sent the drone up for a different perspective on the grand homes. I'm really drawn to the unique rooflines, tile patterns and gardens throughout Charleston's most coveted neighborhood. I'd give just about anything to spend an afternoon lounging by that pool in the middle of the frame. In fact, that back yard has me ready to tear up our entire yard and build a replica in its honor.

This photograph was captured with a DJI Phantom 3 Professional drone.

Fontaine des Quatre Parties du Monde

Luxembourg Gardens, Paris, France
June 07, 2016 by Matt Spangard

This world-famous monument/fountain is located in the south entrance to the Luxembourg Gardens in the 6th arrondissement of Paris. It was designed and sculpted by Jena-Baptise Carpeaux. The women in the fountain represent the four parts of the world and were initially criticized as "thin, unhealthy women with wasted flanks... furrowed thighs... twisting around in a bizarre circle without any grace." Ten years later, after Carpeaux's death, it was heralded as a masterpiece.

The best part for me about strolling past these statues and through the Luxembourg Gardens is recalling Ernest Hemingway's musings on wandering through the gardens with his young son when Paris was the burgeoning writer's hometown and he was so poor he'd have to hunt for pigeons in the gardens with a slingshot between paychecks.

This photograph was captured with a Nikon D90.
