Plotagraph: Elk River Falls

Elk River Falls, North Carolina
September 14, 2017 by Matt Spangard

Elk River Falls are located in Western North Carolina, right along the border of Tennessee. The hike from the parking area is super short but there are a lot of smaller game trails heading off in all directions from the Falls. The sound of the falls make it easy to keep your bearings and find your way back to the river.

This photo was captured with a Sony a6300 and then converted to a Plotagraph.

Falls Creek

Beech Mountain, North Carolina
April 17, 2017 by Matt Spangard

The Falls Trail hiking trail follows Falls Creek around the Buckeye Recreation Center on Beech Mountain. It's a one-mile, family-friendly hiking trail with a lot of interesting sights along the way. If you'd like to hike the Falls Trail — or the more difficult trails of the Emerald Outback — this summer, check out our mountain chalet, Slopeside.

This photograph was captured with a Sony a6300.

South Carolina Riverbanks

Riverbanks Zoo & Garden
March 26, 2017 by Matt Spangard

There's a bridge that separates the SC Riverbanks Zoo from the Botanical Gardens. It feels like you are going on an adventure over the river and into the forest as you traverse the two connected parks.

As we walked over the bridge, we watched a cormorant diving for fish. He would swim underwater for 30 seconds to a minute with each dive. It seemed like he was part bird, part river otter.

This photograph was captured with a Sony a6300.

My Valentine

Paris, France
February 14, 2017 by Matt Spangard

Happy Valentine's Day! This is my Valentine, along the Seine in the City of Love. The Eiffel Tower can be seen, far downstream, keeping watch over Paris. I find that the Eiffel Tower is almost more impressive from a distance as you see how high it towers over all of the thick six-story apartment blocks all around Paris.

This photograph was captured with a Nikon D90.

Chicago River

Chicago, Illinois
February 05, 2017 by Matt Spangard

I took this photograph of the Chicago River 12 years ago. It's hard to believe how desolate the riverfront looked back then. I need to go back and take this same photo today to compare the two.

University of Tampa

Tampa, Florida
February 03, 2017 by Matt Spangard

Today's photograph is in honor of my friend, Vera, who recently accepted a position at the University of Tampa!

The Tampa Bay Hotel was built between 1888 and 1891 by railroad magnate Henry B. Plant. A victim of The Great Depression, the hotel closed in 1930. In 1933, a junior college in Tampa moved in, eventually expanding and becoming the University of Tampa.

The hotel is an architectural jewel, blending "modern-day" concrete construction with Victorian and Moorish designs. Especially unique to most American architecture are the crescent moons adorning the minarets.

This photograph was captured with a DJI Phantom 3 Professional drone.

Crew

Tampa, Florida
May 29, 2016 by Matt Spangard

I embraced my inner "Social Network" and tried my hand at a little tilt-shift crew shot. It was a beautiful afternoon and the sun was just starting to go down. You can see the reflection of the famed "Beer Can" building in the water behind the boat.

The Left Bank

Paris, France
May 10, 2016 by Matt Spangard

The Golden Hour in Paris is a photographer's dream. There's not much to say about this photograph of the Left Bank other than it's a really nice way to remember Paris.

This photograph was captured with a Canon PowerShot SD780 IS and edited in Adobe Lightroom.

Marshland

Figure Eight Island, North Carolina
March 24, 2016 by Matt Spangard

The marshes of Figure Eight Island — located just outside of Wilmington, NC — are amazing. The next time I go, I need to get a small boat and work my way though each of the little creeks rather than rely on my drone to find the perfect spots.

This photograph was captured with a DJI Phantom 3 Professional that just happens to be nearly $400 off at the moment.
