With the cold hitting the US hard this week, I thought I'd take it back to last spring on Siesta Key Beach in Florida. Unlike most beaches, where the sand is made out of mostly coral and shells, the sand at Siesta Key Beach is very fine quartz from the Appalachian Mountains. It's almost white and it's reflective properties make it cool to bare feet even in the middle of the summer.

The entire time we were at Siesta Key Beach, the clouds threatened to let loose on us but it never rained. It did, however, make for some really cool shadows on the sand under the crystal clear water as the clouds soared by.

It's Shark Week! Every photo this week will have some reference to the ocean, sharks or some of their friends. This is what the surfers and swimmers at Siesta Key Beach look like from 350 feet up. Whenever I'm flying near the ocean, I always make a point to take a couple straight-down photographs like this in hopes that I'll manage to catch the back or shadow of a shark or other big fish. There's nothing like a day at the beach! One of the coolest features of Siesta Key Beach is that each lifeguard tower is a different color. It makes catching up with your friends a lot easier! We set up camp next to the green tower. I know a bunch of people in this photo but it's pretty hard to pick them out from up here.

There's nothing like a day at the beach! This was my first trip to Siesta Key Beach in Florida and it was great! The sand was cool and the waves were as still as a bathtub. Not so good for catching a wave but perfect for a family. When we visit the beaches in the Carolinas, we're always worried one of our kids is going to get caught in the rip but you could probably walk out 100 yards into the water at Siesta Key and the water would still be calm and shallow.
