Ahead of the Storm

Blue Ridge Parkway, North Carolina
April 15, 2017 by Matt Spangard

This is the Linn Cove Viaduct on the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina. It's truly a structural engineering masterpiece. It's completion in the 1980s marked the official completion of the Blue Ridge Parkway, joining the north portion and the south portion of the Parkway.

This photograph was captured with a DJI Phantom 3 Professional drone.

Mountain Rainstorm

Beech Mountain, North Carolina
November 08, 2016 by Matt Spangard

The weather on Beech Mountain can turn on a dime. a minute before I took this photo, we were sitting on the deck of 5506' enjoying a beer in the sun. Ten minutes later, everything was appropriately watered and we were back to our sunny afternoon. Any day now and that rain will be replaced with snow!

This photograph was captured with a Sony a6300.

Sailing Through the Storm

Nassau, Bahamas
October 05, 2016 by Matt Spangard

I took this photograph as the captain of our ship, Carnival's Ecstasy, expertly threaded the needle between two storms. That same ship was steaming directly toward Hurricane Matthew earlier this week and was diverted to Mexico to sail around and avoid the storm. My thoughts are with the crew and guests of the Ecstasy this week. I have a feeling the seas won't be nearly as calm as they were on our trip in May.

This photograph was captured with a Sony NEX-7.

Siesta Key Storm Clouds

July 30, 2016 by Matt Spangard

The entire time we were at Siesta Key Beach, the clouds threatened to let loose on us but it never rained. It did, however, make for some really cool shadows on the sand under the crystal clear water as the clouds soared by.

This photograph was captured with a DJI Phantom 3 Professional drone.

Alone

Charleston, South Carolina
June 29, 2016 by Matt Spangard

The Civil War started when a shot exploded above that little fortified island in the middle of this photograph. That island is Fort Sumter. You can see Charleston in the background and James Island to the left.

Fort Sumter is a neat place to visit (you can only arrive by boat) but from a distance, once everybody has gone home for the day, it always strikes me as incredibly lonely. Especially on a stormy night like this. If any place in the world is haunted, Fort Sumter must make the top 10 list.

This photograph was captured with a Sony NEX-7.

Outrunning the Storm

Nassau, Bahamas
June 16, 2016 by Matt Spangard

Leaving Nassau on a cruise ship is an interesting event. The ships queued up one after another to race out of the harbor in all directions, trying to beat the storms. It looks like our neighbors on Norwegian Cruise Lines forgot to pay the weather bill before their departure.

As we left the port, we sat on our terrace and watched the storm clouds absolutely chase down the Norwegian ship. They managed to stay ahead right up until the end.

This photograph was captured with a Sony NEX-7.
