Grandfather Mountain

Grandfather Mountain
August 20, 2017 by Matt Spangard

The famous Linn Cove Viaduct wraps around Grandfather Mountain. It was the last stretch of the Blue Ridge Parkway to be completed in the 1980s and was an engineering marvel of its time. If you look closely at the ridge of Grandfather Mountain, you can see the suspension bridge that connects two of the peaks.

This image was captured while filming my entry for the 2017 Triple Aught Design Fall Film Festival. If you haven't watched and voted for my short film, I'd really appreciate it if you did! It takes five seconds and there's no registration required.

This photograph was captured with a DJI Mavic pro drone.

Ahead of the Storm

Blue Ridge Parkway, North Carolina
April 15, 2017 by Matt Spangard

This is the Linn Cove Viaduct on the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina. It's truly a structural engineering masterpiece. It's completion in the 1980s marked the official completion of the Blue Ridge Parkway, joining the north portion and the south portion of the Parkway.

This photograph was captured with a DJI Phantom 3 Professional drone.

Nature's Frame

Blowing Rock, North Carolina
March 30, 2017 by Matt Spangard

When you reach higher altitudes on the Blue Ridge Parkway, the trees are always at battle with the wind. The gnarled, wind-swept trees and low brush often make for natural frames of the mountains behind them. If you can catch it at sunset, you're in for a special treat.

Parkway Views

Blue Ridge Parkway, North Carolina
March 16, 2017 by Matt Spangard

I love it when we can time a drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway at sunset. It's usually pretty quiet up there that late in the day as the tourists go home and it becomes more of a way for people to get from town back home in the mountains. This photograph was captured last Friday and it was getting really cold out, too. It was so peaceful. Everything had a cold blue tint to it until the sky turned a brilliant salmon color.

Peaceful Bridge

Blowing Rock, North Carolina
January 19, 2017 by Matt Spangard

This bridge is on the Blue Ridge Parkway just north of Blowing Rock. I pass over this bridge at least once a month and I'm always fascinated by the dozen dead trees towering over the forest. It's reforestation happening right before your eyes. If the trees were all hit by the same storm, it must have been a sight to behold.

This scene is from last Sunday on the Blue Ridge Parkway near Linn Cove Viaduct. The smoke from the forest fires in Western North Carolina were blowing their way into the High Country.

The Linn Cove Viaduct represents one of the most famous stretches of tarmac on the East Coast. Completed in 1987, the Viaduct was the final piece to the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Linn Cove Viaduct

Blue Ridge Parkway, North Carolina
June 11, 2016 by Matt Spangard

This 1,243 foot-long bridge was the final section to be completed on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Work began on the Blue Ridge Parkway on September 11, 1935. Construction of the Linn Cove Viaduct began in 1979 and was completed in 1987. It consists of 50 concrete pieces that were poured indoors at a nearby facility and then lowered into place by crane. The Viaduct was needed to provide access around the giant boulder fields of Grandfather Mountain without destroying them by cutting a tunnel through them.
