Plotagraph: Last Light Over Boneyard Beach

Boneyard Beach
October 06, 2017 by Matt Spangard

Boneyard Beach is named for the driftwood that is pulled in on the tide and deposited on the beach to be bleached bone white by the sun, salt and sand. It's a quick 30-minute excursion from Isle of Palms Marina and well worth the trip. The island really lights up as the sun sets, drawing long shadows on the "bones" that litter the beach.

This photo was captured with a DJI Phantom 3 Professional drone and then converted to a Plotagraph.

Southport Gazebo

Southport, North Carolina
October 05, 2017 by Matt Spangard

We visited Southport for the first time last weekend. It was a quintessential North Carolina coastal town with a waterfront stretch of a dozen restaurants and bars. We had a great time relaxing with the kids and Lori's parents and even ran into some old friends who used to be our neighbors 15 years ago (Hi Dena & Lisa!).

This photo was captured with a DJI Mavic pro drone and a PolarPro Cinema Series filter.

Plotagraph: Sun Setting on Fort Moultrie

Fort Moultrie
September 21, 2017 by Matt Spangard

Sullivans Island and Charleston harbor are so peaceful it's hard to imagine the first shot of the Civil War was fired here when a shell fired from a 10-inch mortar burst just 100 feet above Fort Sumter, seen on the left of the horizon in this photograph.

The fort in the foreground is Fort Moultrie and the bridge in the background is the beautiful Ravenal Bridge.

This photograph was captured with a DJI Phantom 2 drone with a GoPro Hero3+ Black and then converted to a Plotagraph.

Last Week

Wild Dunes
August 27, 2017 by Matt Spangard

As summer comes to an end, I was reflecting back at all of the great places we've gone over the break. This photo is from the patio at the condo we stay at each summer at Wild Dunes.

This photograph was captured with a Sony a6300.

Cloudy Solar Eclipse

Charlotte, North Carolina
August 25, 2017 by Matt Spangard

A band of clouds briefly passed over us during the solar eclipse. We were worried that the show was over but they moved on pretty quickly. In hindsight, I kind of like the photographs that I captured during that period. I was using a makeshift solar filter that made the clouds almost look like some far-off galaxy.

This photograph was captured with a Sony a6300 and a Sony E PZ 18-105mm F4 G OSS Power Zoom Lens, which happens to be my go-to lens 90% of the time.

Birth of PAC-MAN or The Big Beep or Waka Waka Waka

Charlotte, North Carolina
August 22, 2017 by Matt Spangard

Each frame in this series of images of the solar eclipse were taken roughly ten minutes from one another. I shot them with an in-body filter that I created from a pair of solar eclipse glasses. I realized that the shape of one lens would perfectly fit over an APS-C sensor, just like a Fogal Net from the golden age of film. Luckily, I generally subscribe to the Navy Seal mantra of "Two is one. One is none." because I melted a perfect pinhole in the filter in my first attempt. The focal length of the lens I was using (210mm) was just right for turning my camera lens into an instant firestarter. They should bring those things on Survivor! I backed off a bit to a 105mm lens and everything went perfectly after that.

Winter Sunset

Beech Mountain, North Carolina
April 26, 2017 by Matt Spangard

The sunsets in the highest town East of the Rockies are nearly always dramatic. This salmon pink sunset was taken on my last drone flight on Beech Mountain this winter. It's always stunning to watch the clouds snake above the valleys far away when there is a high cloud ceiling on the Mountain.

This photograph was captured with a DJI Mavic Pro drone.

Full Moon (Almost)

Grandfather, North Carolina
April 08, 2017 by Matt Spangard

April 11's full moon is called the "Pink Moon." I think  March's full moon didn't get the memo.

This photograph was captured on the Blue Ridge Parkway just as the sun had set, leaving behind a brilliant lavender and pink sky that blended right into the hazy Blue Ridge Mountains.

This photograph was captured with a Sony a6300.

Nature's Frame

Blowing Rock, North Carolina
March 30, 2017 by Matt Spangard

When you reach higher altitudes on the Blue Ridge Parkway, the trees are always at battle with the wind. The gnarled, wind-swept trees and low brush often make for natural frames of the mountains behind them. If you can catch it at sunset, you're in for a special treat.

This photograph was captured with a Sony a6300.
