Heavenly Ride

Lake Tahoe, CA
November 17, 2015 by Matt Spangard

The future potential of Hyperloop is awesome but the greatest form of transportation currently known to man is the ski gondola. This one picks you up right in the middle of Heavenly Village in Stateline, CA, and takes you 2.4 miles straight up into the mountain.

The last time we were in Lake Tahoe, our condo was located in the Village right next to the gondola station. The only thing better than watching a gondola fly past your condo is watching your condo fly past a gondola.

Disco Chicken or L’Oiseau de feu sur l’arche

Charlotte, NC
November 16, 2015 by Matt Spangard

Charlotte knows the giant sculpture in front of the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art as the "Disco Chicken" but it's real name is "L’Oiseau de feu sur l’arche," or "The Large Bird of Fire on an Arch." Most photos from the street reveal this giant statue as a hulking monument to art being larger than life... But take those pictures from 20-30 feet up with a drone and the Disco Chicken seems much less of a menace.

This photograph was captured with a DJI Phantom 3 Professional drone.

deadmau5 Purrari

Charlotte, NC
November 15, 2015 by Matt Spangard

This was deadmau5' ride in the Miami2Ibiza Gumball 3000 rally.

Only deadmau5 could take a perfectly good 458 Italia and improve upon it by wrapping it in Nyan Cat and replacing all of the logos with jumping cats that look suspiciously like Puma logos.

Personal note to deadmau5 — if you're out there and reading this and need a copilot for next year's Gumball, let me know :-)

This photograph was captured with a Sony NEX-7.

Secrets in the Afternoon

Playa Mujeres, Mexico
November 13, 2015 by Matt Spangard

I received my new DJI Phantom 3 Professional drone the night before we headed to Mexico for an early kick-off to summer. Naturally, I modified an old Pelican case to fit the new drone late into the night and brought it along.

This beautiful resort is Secrets Playa Mujeres, located 30 minutes — and a million miles — north of Cancún. It's much more easy-going and peaceful than your average Yucatán mega-resort and it's a great place to spend a relaxing weekend.

This photograph was taken on one of my very first flights with the new drone. Not a bad start!

Notre Dame Royalty

Paris, France
November 12, 2015 by Matt Spangard

We spent an overcast day wandering through the Left Bank, making our way to Petit Pont and the  Notre Dame Cathedral. The sky opened up just as we approached, showering us with rain. Getting wet wasn't so cool but it was worth it as it cast a very ominous light across the façade of the great cathedral, bringing the famous gargoyles and sentinels to life.

This photograph was captured with a Nikon D90.

Delphinus III

Isle of Palms Marina
November 11, 2015 by Matt Spangard

We took the dual-hulled Delphinus out to Capers Island on a typically beautiful Charleston summer evening to explore Boneyard Beach and chase the dolphins. We saw the Delphinus coming home to port at sunset a few nights later just as we were finishing dinner so I fired up the drone and took some photos of the crew who graciously hosted us earlier in the week. Big props to the ship and crew for making so many special memories for families every single night of the week!

This photograph was captured with a DJI Phantom 3 Professional drone.

Catalonia is not Spain

Plaça de Catalunya, Barcelona, Spain
November 10, 2015 by Matt Spangard

With the vote yesterday by the Catalonia Regional Assembly in favor of a resolution to split from Spain I was reminded of this photograph that I took more than a decade ago in Barcelona. This screen-printed sign was posted above the stairs going down to the Metro at the appropriately named Plaça de Catalunya. I found it fitting that a moth was perched on top of the "A" waiting to take flight.

Catalan nationalism was codified in 1892 but traces its roots back to the 1600s. The modern day struggle for independence began to gain steam with the fall of the Franco regime in 1975.

Whether you consider this a movement of independence or one of separatism — or both — I hope you keep the people of Catalunya and Spain in your mind and prayers. Economically, Southern Europe doesn't need any more strain as it recovers from the last downturn. Unfortunately, this movement — or at least the reaction to it — is likely to be seen through an economic lens rather than a cultural one. Let's hope it comes to a peaceful resolution, regardless of the outcome.

If you haven't heard of this movement before or would like to learn more, check out these articles:

Cast of Characters

NASCAR Hall of Fame
November 08, 2015 by Matt Spangard

Keeping with the trend of Sunday Carday (is that a thing?), here's another photograph from the Charlotte pit stop of the 2014 Gumball 3000 race from Miami to Ibiza.

The Nissan GTR was piloted by internet-famous Shmee and the blue "Purrari" was piloted by world-famous Deadmau5!

This photograph was captured with a Sony NEX-7.
