Sullivan's Island Fire Station

Sullivan's Island, South Carolina
January 08, 2016 by Matt Spangard

Sullivans Island may be the most relaxed, congenial place in the United States... and if it's good enough for Bill F***ing Murray, it's good enough for me. If Mr. F****ing Murray's shenanigans catch his house on fire, these are the guys who will 1) put it out and 2) drink a bunch of beer with him. Maybe not in that order.

They also have tremendous sunsets. All. The. Time. See the Ravenel Bridge on the horizon there? Those little bumps on the horizon right in the middle are downtown Charleston's greatest landmarks. What a beautiful place to be!

This photograph was captured with a DJI Phantom 3 Professional Drone. Thinking about buying a drone? Before you do, check out my drone and drone accessories buyers guide.

Over Fourth Ward

Charlotte, NC
January 07, 2016 by Matt Spangard

You seldom see photos of Uptown Charlotte from the viewpoint of Fourth Ward like this one. On the ground, Fourth Ward is dominated less by highrises and more by trees, parks and residential complexes that are longer than they are tall. Having a drone really helps put the city into perspective.

This photograph was captured with a DJI Phantom 3 Professional drone. If you're in the market for one, check out my drone and drone accessory buyer's guide!

Trouble in Mos Eisley

Mos Eisley, Tatooine
January 06, 2016 by Matt Spangard

This is the second in what just might become a series if I'm not careful. Learn more about the backstory in "Moment of Truth or #HanShotFirst."

California Trail

Heavenly Valley, California
January 05, 2016 by Matt Spangard

I will never, ever get tired of this view. California Trail may not be Heavenly's best run but it's certainly the most picturesque. It's also a very welcome sight if you just made the long, flat traverse from the Nevada side of the mountain.

This photograph was captured with an ancient Sony DSC-S70 that happened to be in my kit that day. I really should reshoot it with a modern camera.

Moment of Truth or #HanShotFirst

Mos Eisley, Tatooine
January 04, 2016 by Matt Spangard

I've been asking for this Lego set for my birthday, Father's day and Christmas for the last two-and-a-half years. I think everybody thought it was a joke. It's now out of production so it was the only thing on my Christmas list this year. I finally got it! There may have been a Wii Freakout™.

I finally know who shot first! Lucas should be ashamed of himself for those rewrites.

SR-71 Blackbird

Robins Air Force Base, Georgia
January 03, 2016 by Matt Spangard

When I learned that there was an SR-71 Blackbird on display at Robins Air Force Base, I knew I had to check it out! This is the stuff childhood dreams are made of. I was even more blown away when I got there and found out that the Blackbird's stablemates in this hangar included an RQ-4 Global Hawk, U-2 Reconnaissance Aircraft and a MH-53 Pave Low!

If you ever find yourself in the middle of Georgia, you've got to check out the museum at Robins AFB!

Afternoon on the Charleston Battery

Charleston, South Carolina
January 02, 2016 by Matt Spangard

There's something special about the Charleston Battery. More history than most other places in America and absolutely magnificent homes. The views of the water or the Ravenel Bridge, or the USS Yorktown, or Fort Sumter or Castle Pinckney don't hurt, either. I guess that's why I proposed to my wife in this special neighborhood park 15 years ago.

This photograph was captured with a DJI Phantom 3 Professional drone.

Gondola Ride into the Sunset

Stateline, California
December 31, 2015 by Matt Spangard

The last time we went to Tahoe, we stayed just at the base of the "new" Heavenly village. Watching the gondolas fly by your window is a great way to get stoked to get on the mountain. These guys are headed up to the Tamarack Lodge for some fun at the "Unbuckle Aprés Ski" on-mountain nightclub. These guys won't be the only ones partying tonight!

This photograph was captured with a Sony NEX-7.
