Rising from the Ashes

Charlotte, North Carolina
February 16, 2016 by Matt Spangard

This is the backside of Charlotte's Savona Mill. The western-most point of Charlotte's greenway ends right in front of this building.

Savona Mill is also the home of Blue Blaze Brewing, slated to open up in a few months right where the greenway currently ends. Make sure you sign up for the grand opening guest list!

This photograph was captured with a DJI Phantom 3 Professional drone.

It doesn't get much better than Diamond Peak on an SPF 100 kind of day!

Sunday Afternoon in the Park

Paris, France
February 14, 2016 by Matt Spangard

Happy Valentines Day!

The Eiffel Tower seems like an appropriate photo to celebrate the occasion. Cheers to anybody fortunate enough to be opening up a bottle of wine and a picnic basket in this park today!

This photograph was captured with a Nikon D90.

Last Light Over Boneyard Beach

Capers Island, South Carolina
February 13, 2016 by Matt Spangard

Boneyard Beach is named for the driftwood that is pulled in on the tide and deposited on the beach to be bleached bone white by the sun, salt and sand. It's a quick 30-minute excursion from Isle of Palms Marina and well worth the trip. The island really lights up as the sun sets, drawing long shadows on the "bones" that litter the beach.

This photograph was captured with a DJI Phantom 3 Professional drone.

Figure Eight Island Surf

Figure Eight Island, North Carolina
February 12, 2016 by Matt Spangard

I spent the weekend at Figure Eight Island a couple of weeks ago and had a great time! Here's a photo of the surf from my drone.

Check out the first photo I posted of Figure Eight Island for a little background and to watch a behind-the-scenes video of how I edited the photo.

This photograph was captured with a DJI Phantom 3 Professional drone.

Southpark Sunset

Charlotte, North Carolina
February 11, 2016 by Matt Spangard

Before Southpark was a television show, it was a neighborhood in Charlotte. And a pretty solid neighborhood at that. This photograph is taken by drone directly above our house, looking over to Southpark Mall.

A bit of trivia: Charlotte has two nuclear powerplants located within 20 miles of the center of the city center (thanks to Duke Energy). See that plume of steam on the horizon just next to the sun? That is the Catawba Nuclear Station in action.

This photograph was captured with a DJI Phantom 3 Professional drone.

Morning Haze

Isle of Palms, South Carolina
February 10, 2016 by Matt Spangard

The Wild Dunes Yacht Harbor is a private harbor located adjacent to the Isle of Palms Marina. It's a great place to go for a morning walk or bike ride. On this particular morning, the water was still and the morning haze had yet to burn off, making it particularly peaceful. I'm still not sure what the parasail boat was already doing offshore but I'm guessing employees were giving each other rides before their day got started.

Nothing says summer to me like a stroll around the Isle of Palms Marina and Wild Dunes Yacht Harbor. It seems a fitting photograph to post with the forecast hovering around freezing in Charlotte this week. Here's to dreaming of warmer days!

This photograph was captured with a DJI Phantom 3 Professional drone.

London Underground

London, England
February 09, 2016 by Matt Spangard

The iconic "Underground" signs in London are the gateway to one of the easiest to use metros in the world.

London's Underground signs may not be as artsy as counterparts in Paris or Barcelona but they are no less recognizable and they're as British as Jeremy Clarkson rolling over a Reliant Robin. (You're welcome if you haven't seen that clip yet).

The King & His Gargoyle

Dame Paris, France
February 08, 2016 by Matt Spangard

This is a detail from the façade of the Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris. The façade is an embarrassment of riches, covered in statues and sculptures, all telling a collective story.

The aptly-named, "Gallery of Kings," sounds like it was pulled straight from an Indiana Jones movie. It is a series of sculptures representing each of the twenty-eight generations of kings of Judah.

If you are ever fortunate enough to visit Notre Dame, take a few minutes to enjoy the splendor of the exterior before fighting the masses for a look inside.

This photograph was captured with a Nikon D90 and that terrible "masses" pun was entirely unintentional so I'm leaving it in.

The View from Wesley Heights

Charlotte, North Carolina
February 07, 2016 by Matt Spangard

Today's the day! Super Bowl 50!

Good luck to the Panthers. Charlotte is ready for a big win!

I took this photo on the same flight as yesterday's photo of Historic Savona Mill. This is looking at Uptown Charlotte and Bank of America Stadium from above Savona Mill in Wesley Heights. Haven't heard of Savona Mill yet? It's going to be the new Atherton Mill and home to Blue Blaze Brewing!

This photograph was captured with a DJI Phantom 3 Professional drone.
