Missed Opportunity

North Wilkesboro, North Carolina
March 16, 2016 by Matt Spangard

I've written about North Wilkesboro Speedway in the past. This is another photo in the series showing the old Winston Cup Series track. Some day, somebody is going to do right by this piece of history and breathe new life into it.

This photograph was captured with a DJI Phantom 3 Professional drone that just happens to be on sale $340 off at the moment!

Giraffe

Disney's Animal Kingdom
March 15, 2016 by Matt Spangard

This is a reticulated giraffe, also known as a Somali giraffe. It is native to Somalia and parts of Ethiopia and Kenya. It can also be found living on the "African savanna" at Disney's Animal Kingdom. The Wildlife adventure at Disney's Animal Kingdom really is fantastic. It's sort of like Wall-E meets a traditional zoo as they drive you around in an expedition vehicle through a recreation of various African habitats. Despite clever — and often natural — fence-like dividers between each group of animals, you still feel more like you are in a cage and the animals are out in the wild as you lumber through.

If only they'd let the cheetahs out to chase down a gazelle or zebra once in a while to keep things real! They say danger helps burn certain memories in our minds... that would be one way to ensure the younger kids don't forget their first time to Walt Disney World!

This photograph was captured with a Nikon D90.

Wine After Work

Jardin du Luxembourg, Paris, France
March 14, 2016 by Matt Spangard

Go to a park in the United States and you're likely to find some empty beer cans down by the river. Go to a park in Paris — make that the park in Paris — and you find half-full bottles of wine sitting at the feet of famed statues. I'm not sure if this was the result of a 3-bottle picnic lunch that just couldn't be finished or if something more sinister was going on. What if it was an offering to the statue? I think this warrants a little more research...

This photograph was captured with a Nikon D90.

La Puesta del Sol

Cancún, Mexico
March 13, 2016 by Matt Spangard

We spent a long weekend in Secrets at Playa Mujeres last year and had a great time! The days were bright and beautiful but so were the sunsets. On this particular night, the clouds rolled in with the sun at the end of the day and they filtered the light beautifully.

Blade Runner

Charlotte, North Carolina
March 12, 2016 by Matt Spangard

This is what happens when you're shooting long-exposure night shots from your drone and hit the shutter on the way home. As I was editing this photo, I could hear the late, great Bob Ross in my head:

“We don’t make mistakes, just happy little accidents.”
— Bob Ross

I love the way this happy little accident turned the west side of Charlotte into a scene from Blade Runner. If this technique goes viral in the drone groups, I'm totally taking credit for it. After all, the whole "spinning steel wool" thing is way beyond played out at this point, right?

Yacht Harbor

Isle of Palms, South Carolina
March 11, 2016 by Matt Spangard

It's been a warm week in the Carolinas and it's got me thinking about summer. I took this photo of Wild Dunes Yacht Harbor on Isle of Palms last summer and I'm ready to go back! If you have a yacht in the harbor and want to go out on the water for some sweet shots of her at sea, let me know!

Nature's Shadow

Western North Carolina, USA
March 10, 2016 by Matt Spangard

There's something really peaceful about flying the drone up over the forest. You actually can see the forest for the trees! This was late in the afternoon and I love the way the trees cast long shadows on the ground, making the forest appear both more and less dense at the same time.

Figure Eight Marsh

Figure Eight Island, North Carolina
March 09, 2016 by Matt Spangard

This photograph of the Intracoastal Waterway was taken from the back deck of the house we were staying at on Figure Eight Island. The sun absolutely set the entire marsh on fire as it crawled below the horizon.

This photograph was captured with a Sony NEX-7.

Night Op

Figure Eight Island, North Carolina
March 07, 2016 by Matt Spangard

We stayed at a tremendous beach house out at Figure Eight Island. Because it was the off-season, it seemed like we were the only ones on the island. After the sun went down, I took a quick flight for some night photographs of our house all lit up. There are probably six or seven houses in this photograph but with little light pollution, no moon and few other lights on across the island, all you see is our place. Everybody else is in the kitchen about to eat so that lone figure on the desk is yours truly. This is one of the unique selfies I've every taken... chiefly because I wasn't even thinking about how much I would stand out when I took it.

Ommegang High Walkers

Grand Place, Bruxelles, Belgium
March 07, 2016 by Matt Spangard

If you ever plan a trip to Brussels during the summer, try to schedule it during the Ommegang weekend (typically as June turns to July). We had no idea what Ommegang was and were absolutely amazed as we stumbled upon it after dinner one night. It's a medieval procession through a medieval town, ending in a spectacular show at the Grand Place (the central square of Brussels).

These stilt walkers were so high that other men on stilts would walk right between their legs.

This photograph was captured with a tiny Canon Digital IXUX 30.
