Fort Sumter Intel

Charleston Harbor, South Carolina
January 12, 2016 by Matt Spangard

The bombardment and subsequent surrender of Fort Sumter marked the start of the American Civil War. It's hard to imagine this peaceful place was home to the beginning of one of the darkest chapters in our history.

This photograph was captured with a DJI Phantom 3 Professional drone.

Thinking about buying a drone? Before you do, check out my drone and drone accessories buyers guide.

Shredding Sacré-Cœur

Montmarte, Paris, France
January 10, 2016 by Matt Spangard

As far as improvised skateparks go, the basilica of Sacré-Cœur in Paris' Montmarte neighborhood might be one of the most scenic. Sure, the basilica is amazing but look at the form of that little skater, just hanging in the air, ready to attack that skate deck!

This photograph was captured with a Nikon D-90.

Sunset on the London Eye

London, England
January 09, 2016 by Matt Spangard

This particular day started off with brunch at one of the world's greatest markets, Borough Market. We followed brunch up by allowing a Polish bartender to serve us a blind taste of every single vodka in the Vodka Bar at the House of Wine solely so he could prove to us that the best vodka in the world comes from Poland. (spoiler alert: he was right. In our very scientific research of 20 or so vodkas from around the world, Belvadere was the unanimous winner.)

Because we all agreed that Polish vodkas were the best, he would not accept our money for the tab. We still slipped several large notes under a coaster and split before he could catch us and make us do more shots.

After that, we took a stroll along the Thames and stopped at a few more pubs... and maybe the Tate Modern. By the time we made it to the London Eye, the sun was already starting to set. After calling the day an early success, I took this photograph to commemorate the occasion. If you are ever in London and for some reason can't think of something to do, a walk along the Thames is never a bad idea. Props to Vera and Craig for being the consummate hosts!

This photograph was captured with a tiny Canon Digital IXUS.

Sullivan's Island Fire Station

Sullivan's Island, South Carolina
January 08, 2016 by Matt Spangard

Sullivans Island may be the most relaxed, congenial place in the United States... and if it's good enough for Bill F***ing Murray, it's good enough for me. If Mr. F****ing Murray's shenanigans catch his house on fire, these are the guys who will 1) put it out and 2) drink a bunch of beer with him. Maybe not in that order.

They also have tremendous sunsets. All. The. Time. See the Ravenel Bridge on the horizon there? Those little bumps on the horizon right in the middle are downtown Charleston's greatest landmarks. What a beautiful place to be!

This photograph was captured with a DJI Phantom 3 Professional Drone. Thinking about buying a drone? Before you do, check out my drone and drone accessories buyers guide.

Over Fourth Ward

Charlotte, NC
January 07, 2016 by Matt Spangard

You seldom see photos of Uptown Charlotte from the viewpoint of Fourth Ward like this one. On the ground, Fourth Ward is dominated less by highrises and more by trees, parks and residential complexes that are longer than they are tall. Having a drone really helps put the city into perspective.

This photograph was captured with a DJI Phantom 3 Professional drone. If you're in the market for one, check out my drone and drone accessory buyer's guide!

California Trail

Heavenly Valley, California
January 05, 2016 by Matt Spangard

I will never, ever get tired of this view. California Trail may not be Heavenly's best run but it's certainly the most picturesque. It's also a very welcome sight if you just made the long, flat traverse from the Nevada side of the mountain.

This photograph was captured with an ancient Sony DSC-S70 that happened to be in my kit that day. I really should reshoot it with a modern camera.

Moment of Truth or #HanShotFirst

Mos Eisley, Tatooine
January 04, 2016 by Matt Spangard

I've been asking for this Lego set for my birthday, Father's day and Christmas for the last two-and-a-half years. I think everybody thought it was a joke. It's now out of production so it was the only thing on my Christmas list this year. I finally got it! There may have been a Wii Freakoutâ„¢.

I finally know who shot first! Lucas should be ashamed of himself for those rewrites.

This photograph was captured with a Sony NEX-7.
