The Bridge to Figure Eight Island

Figure Eight Island, North Carolina
February 26, 2016 by Matt Spangard

Figure Eight Island is a member of an elite club of islands who are only accessible by sea or by a private bridge. In order to drive to Figure Eight, you must first clear a guardhouse on the mainland before proceeding over this bridge. Access to the island is carefully protected, which explains why the Figure Eight guest list includes Dustin Hoffman, Alec Baldwin, Robert Downey, Jr., Jennifer Aniston, former Morgan Stanley CEO & Chairman John Mack and North Carolina-Great, Dean Smith (also North Carolina-not-so-great, John Edwards).

This photograph was captured with a DJI Phantom 3 Professional drone that just happens to be on sale $260 off at the moment!

Bell Tower Sun Dial

Charlotte, North Carolina
February 25, 2016 by Matt Spangard

Queens University has a fantastic clock/bell tower. I discovered that if the clock itself ever stops and you really need to know the time, it doubles as a perfectly serviceable, giant sun dial.

This photograph was captured with a DJI Phantom 3 Professional drone that just happens to be on sale $260 off at the moment!

Street Art

Charlotte, North Carolina
February 24, 2016 by Matt Spangard

I hope I don't jinx Charlotte by posting a throwback to the snow week we had earlier this year. Who am I kidding? I love the snow now that I live in the South and don't have to shovel it all day long. Do you know what we do when it snows down here? We go inside and wait for it to melt, sneaking out only for milk — ahem, beer — runs.

This photograph is taken of my office (shout out to Edison Nation & Enventys!) the first day of the storm during a break in the snowfall. You can see that a few "brave" souls still ventured out to work at the office. Personally, I love driving in to the office on snow days. It's not every day the Jeep gets a chance to fulfill it's destiny in life and get off the asphalt, even if only by a few inches. I feel I owe it to the Jeep to have fun in the snow. I'm not sure what my excuse was when I drove a Porsche.

Piccadilly Circus Time Machine

Piccadilly Circus, London, England
February 23, 2016 by Matt Spangard

Ever wonder what London's version of Times Square would have looked like in the 1920s? Just like this. Except without the giant video billboards.

This photograph was captured with a tiny Canon PowerShot SD780 IS, which is why I got a little creative with the editing. Want to learn more about my photo editing process? Watch the video I posted to YouTube.

If the Gumball 3000 awarded a "best ink" award, it would go to Team Galag. Hands down. Check out the detail on this 458 Italia.

IOP Marina

Isle of Palms, South Carolina
February 20, 2016 by Matt Spangard

I'm sure you've figured this out by now but I love hanging out at the Isle of Palms Marina! If anybody is going to have a boat/yacht at the marina this summer and wants to go out on the water for some sweet drone photographs/videos, let me know!

This particular night was perfect. Based on the clouds, they may have been having a rougher time in downtown Charleston but it was beautiful out on Isle of Palms. The gold and fire sunset was the icing on the cake and a great way to begin the evening!

Thanks to everybody who has been enjoying, liking and retweeting my photographs. I really appreciate your support and it's great to know that they're making people happy!

If you've ever wanted to give the drone life a shot, now is a great time! The model that I have and recommend — the DJI Phantom 3 Professional — is currently on sale $260 off. You can buy it here for less than $1,000! After you do, check out my gear page to get the low-down on all of the accessories!

Marsh at Dusk

Figure Eight Island, North Carolina
February 19, 2016 by Matt Spangard

Two days ago, I posted a photo of my drone returning from taking some sunset shots over Figure Eight Island. Here's one of the photos that the drone brought back from that excursion. I love the way the low light ignites each individual marsh reed like it's a painting.

This photograph was captured with a DJI Phantom 3 Professional drone.

Chew Mail Pouch

Somewhere in Western North Carolina
February 18, 2016 by Matt Spangard

There were once 20,000 Mail Pouch Barns spread across 22 states. Farmers received $20-$40 (in today's dollars) to allow Mail Pouch to use the side of their barns as advertisements. While that wasn't much cash, they also agreed to paint the other three sides of the barn any color the farmer wanted as part of the deal. One less thing for the farmer to worry about and $40 bucks in their pocket wasn't such a bad deal! And it was a steal for Mail Pouch Chewing Tobacco.

The advertising scheme was suspended in 1992 when the lead barn painter, Harley Warrick retired. I imagine it probably got pretty hard to find fresh canvasses, too, as ADM and Monsanto were well on their way to gobbling most of America's family farms.

This photograph was captured with a DJI Phantom 3 Professional drone.

My Drone Wanted a Selfie

Figure Eight Island, North Carolina
February 17, 2016 by Matt Spangard

We had a pretty epic sunset on Figure Eight Island, looking out over the Intracoastal Waterway. We had our cameras, tripods, phones and drones out capturing the moment and I realized that I'm always so busy taking pictures with my drone that I never actually take pictures of my drone. So here you have it, Drone Selfie at Sunset.

This photograph of my DJI Phantom 3 Professional drone was captured with a Sony NEX-7.
