Shenanigans

Sullivan's Island, South Carolina
July 23, 2016 by Matt Spangard

After taking a few sunset photographs of this beautiful catamaran out in Charleston Harbor, I thought I'd see what I could learn about it. It turns out it's available for hire! I might need to give them a call the next time we're in Charleston!

This photograph was captured with a Sony a6300.

Inception at Wild Dunes

Wild Dunes, South Carolina
July 22, 2016 by Matt Spangard

This photograph is a vertical panorama of five distinct photographs taken high above Wild Dunes, each at a different angle. Once they are all stitched together, the perspective changes dramatically as you look out towards the ocean.

This photograph was created using a DJI Phantom 3 Professional drone.

Paradise Island Ferry Terminal

Paradise Island, Bahamas
July 21, 2016 by Matt Spangard

One of the greatest things about the islands of the Caribbean is that beauty is all around you, even in rusty old ticket booths. Sure, this ferry "terminal" serves some of the highest-end real estate in the Islands, but why bother painting the rusty bars on the windows of the ticket booth when they're just going to rust again? The patina that is continuously covered up at most resorts is worn like a badge of honor in the Caribbean. And that's exactly how most people like it.

Proud Goblin

Diagon Alley, London
July 20, 2016 by Matt Spangard

This proud goblin stands guard atop thousands of galleons in front of Gringott's Wizarding Bank in Diagon Alley. Is it just me, or does he sort of resemble somebody who is in the news all the time right now?

This photograph was captured with a Sony NEX-7.

Panda Invasion

Heros Convention, Charlotte, North Carolina
July 19, 2016 by Matt Spangard

I'm not sure exactly what's going on here. The panda might be participating in the LEGO invasion or maybe he just finished washing his costume in the laundromat and is simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. Something about that smirk, though, makes me think he's up to no good.

This massive LEGO creation was one of dozens at the Charlotte comic festival, HerosCon. The annual convention has been going on since 1982 and is named for Charlotte's iconic comic shop, "Heros Aren't Hard to Find."

This photograph was captured with a Sony a6300.

Spartan Quality Feeds

Beech Mountain, North Carolina
July 18, 2016 by Matt Spangard

I'm afraid I don't know much about Spartan Quality Feeds other than there are several vintage signs available for sale at auction online. This particular sign is not for sale and it hangs on an exterior wall of Fred's General Mercantile on Beech Mountain.

This photograph was captured with a Sony NEX-7.

Restaurant Marrakesh

Morocco World Showcase, Epcot
July 17, 2016 by Matt Spangard

Have you ever eaten at the Restaurant Marrakesh in the Morocco World Showcase? I've always wanted to but on our last visit, we ate at Spice Road Table instead. It seemed that it might be a little more kid-friendly and we all really enjoyed it. If you have eaten there, how was it? I think we need to add it to our reservations list for our next visit.

Trail Map

North Carolina Mountains
July 16, 2016 by Matt Spangard

I love the angles and lines you get from the shadows when you shoot straight down over a forest. I was surprised on this flight to see that there's an entire trail system hidden below the trees. They're probably game or hunting tracks but I like to think there's a moonshine still somewhere up in those hills and these are the trails the local entrepreneurs use to outwit Boss Hogg and Roscoe.

Sunset Flight Over Isle of Palms

Isle of Palms, South Carolina
July 15, 2016 by Matt Spangard

We had dinner at Taco Mamacita on Sullivan's Island the other night and on the drive back, we could tell the sunset was about to be really spectacular. As we hit the bridge over Breach Inlet, we got those awesome long-range views over the marshes and I could tell we were quickly running out of time. The second we got back, I put the drone up and managed to get a few shots just before the sun set. I was pretty convinced I had missed it as I was getting the drone prepared for the flight but figured I should give it a chance, anyway. I'm glad I did!

Cooper River Rainstorm

Charleston, South Carolina
July 14, 2016 by Matt Spangard

We spent a fun morning on the water in Charleston harbor a couple of weeks ago. The weather was really nice for the first half of the morning and then these ominous clouds started rolling in.

Pictured here is the Ravenel Bridge (the second iteration of the "New Bridge" over the Cooper River) and the decommissioned USS Yorktown.

This photograph was captured with the amazing Sony a6300.
