Smooth Sailing

Isle of Palms, South Carolina
October 21, 2016 by Matt Spangard

This is the dock at the Isle of Palms Marina. He's either an ice hockey player or he's done this a few times before. Either way, it was a smooth move that I wish I had captured in video... although the photograph does capture a sense of the motion.

This photograph was captured with a DJI Phantom 3 Professional drone, which is super cheap on Amazon these days with the release of the new Mavic Pro right around the corner.

Hints of Fall

Beech Mountain, North Carolina
October 20, 2016 by Matt Spangard

This gravel road traverses across the backside of Beech Mountain, just on the other side of Oz Run. It looks flat until you notice that the "dirt" between the trees is actually giant rocks. I took this aerial photograph a few weeks ago just as the trees were starting to change color. This weekend, this same view should be tremendous! If we didn't have guests staying at Slopeside this weekend, I'd be there with a bag full of Phantom batteries!

Land Rover Series IIA Badge

Biltmore Estate, North Carolina
October 19, 2016 by Matt Spangard

Despite camping in the middle of Hurricane Matthew, we had a tremendous time at Overland Expo East this year. The new venue on the grounds of the Biltmore Estate could not be beat. As always, the overland vehicles on display were tremendous. It rained for half of the event and the winds really put the tents to the test but I think it made for some interesting photography opportunities... Like this grille detail of a Land Rover Series IIA. Stay tuned for many more photos from the event in the coming weeks!

Fleet Landing and the Custom House

Charleston, South Carolina
October 18, 2016 by Matt Spangard

There's a reason Fleet Landing is always packed with both tourists and locals on any given day. The haute-design, yet no-frills decor, wide open spaces and view of the harbor from any seat in the house make it clear that 1) you are in a decommissioned Navy building and 2) you will be enjoying delicious seafood and most likely an adult beverage or two.

Order the crab dip to get things started.

Hudson's Market

Wild Dunes, South Carolina
October 17, 2016 by Matt Spangard

We always have a great time when we visit Wild Dunes. I've been going there at least once a year since I was five years old and it's great to be able to take my kids now. It's amazing how it has changed since the early days. Back in those days, we never would have believed there would be a full-fledged hotel and village, complete with market, spa and restaurant where the old beach pavilion once stood.

Biltmore Guardian

Biltmore Estate, North Carolina
October 16, 2016 by Matt Spangard

We visited the Biltmore Estate with the kids last week. They were amazed by the house as they ran through it with my wife like it was their own. We had been camping on the property down by the French Broad river at Overland Expo (during Hurricane Matthew and it was still amazing!).

I had to get back to camp to break everything down so this guardian lion is as close as I got to actually going in to the house.

365 Photos, or Shadows on Beech Mountain

Beech Mountain, North Carolina
October 15, 2016 by Matt Spangard

When I launched #PhotoJambo, I set a goal to post a photo a day for a year and today marks one year of photos! I really appreciate all of the people who have supported me on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and everywhere else!

Taking the photos is the easy part but actually editing them and sharing them with the world has taken a bit more effort. I've posted my daily photos from all over the world, including a tent in the middle of a hurricane to a ship in the middle of the ocean. You have no idea how much you rely on a fast internet connection until you have to upload a 20mb photo over 3G!

My first photo was of the top of Beech Mountain so I thought I would return to my roots with today's photo.

Thank you to everybody who has supported me over the past year!

Follow the Yellow Brick Road

Beech Mountain, North Carolina
October 14, 2016 by Matt Spangard

The Land of Oz opened in 1970 as a Wizard of Oz-themed amusement park on top of Beech Mountain. It closed in 1980 but that didn't keep the "cast members" from returning for a reunion every fall. There has been a resurgence of interest in The Land of Oz in the last few years and in addition to being open for one weekend every fall, it is now open on select weekends over the summer and you can even hire private tours of Oz for parties.

This photograph was captured with a DJI Phantom 3 Professional drone.

Playa Mujeres

Playa Mujeres, QR, Mexico
October 13, 2016 by Matt Spangard

With the weather changing, I could use a little beach time and I think a trip back to Secrets Playa Mujeres would do the trick! It's hard to believe all of this undeveloped beach is just a few minutes outside of Cancún.

This photograph was captured with a DJI Phantom 3 Professional drone.

Only this and nothing more...

Sullivan's Island, South Carolina
October 12, 2016 by Matt Spangard

Much of the East Coast was hit hard by Hurricane Matthew last week but it sounds like Charleston managed to get by with minimal damage. Poe's Tavern lived to serve paradise on a bun another day. Sometimes, it's the little things that really matter. "Only this and nothing more..."

This photograph was captured with a Sony a6300.
