Belgian Street Art

Bruxelles, Belgium
February 02, 2016 by Matt Spangard

Belgium is highly under-appreciated on the world stage as a tourist destination.

Let me ask you a question.

Do you like the following?

  • Beer
  • French Fries
  • Waffles
  • Chocolate
  • Free bar snacks
  • Public street art
  • Comic books
  • Waffles with chocolate while drinking a beer?

If you answered yes to any of those, add a visit to Belgium — Brussels (or Bruxelles) in particular — to your next European vacation because you will find all of the above at every corner.

This photo is just one of a dozen buildings throughout Bruxelles that has been turned into a life-size comic book.

This photo was captured with a Canon PowerShot SD780 IS.

The Good Ol' Boys Take Ibiza

Charlotte, North Carolina
February 01, 2016 by Matt Spangard

Remember that one episode where the Duke Boys went to Ibiza? Me, neither... but this Dodge Challenger was decked out as the General Lee for the Gumball 3000 Miami 2 Ibiza road rally. Ironically, it was piloted by a Brit. If you are even remotely interested in cars and you ever have the opportunity to hang out at a Gumball 3000 pit stop, take it!

This photograph was captured with a Sony NEX-7.

Gatlinburg Golf Course

Pigeon Forge, Tennessee
January 31, 2016 by Matt Spangard

I've never really understood why the Gatlinburg Golf Course is in Pigeon Forge rather than Gatlinburg but it's a nice course nonetheless! Pigeon Forge always seems so hectic and over-the-top when you are caught up in the middle of it but from the air, it seems like a pretty peaceful place.

That four-lane road in the corner is none other than the Dolly Parton Parkway! It would be impossible to overstate the positive impact Dolly Parton has had on this region of Tennessee. She's truly an angel for the people of Sevierville County.

Stroll Along the Battery

Charleston, South Carolina
January 30, 2016 by Matt Spangard

No visit to Charleston would be complete without a stroll along The Holy City's version of the Malecón.

That may not be a totally fair statement. Havana's famous Malecón was "only" built a little over 100 years ago in 1901. Charleston's seawall — called the Battery for the artillery battery that once stood there to protect the harbor — was built over 250 years ago in 1750!

Either way, it's a beautiful place and should be on your must-visit list if you ever find yourself in one of the greatest historic (and modern) cities in America.

This photograph was captured with a DJI Phantom 3 Professional drone.

Sun Setting on Secrets

Playa Mujeres, Mexico
January 29, 2016 by Matt Spangard

This past week of cold weather has me craving a return trip to Mexico, home of Micheladas and sun for days. A day spent back and forth between a poolside chair and that swim-up palapa bar is just what the doctor ordered when the weather turns grey up north.

Fun fact: that swim up bar is both appropriately and shockingly called the Manatee Bar.

This photograph was captured with a DJI Phantom 3 Professional drone.

Joseph at Tiroler Hut

London W2, England
January 28, 2016 by Matt Spangard

Tiroler Hut is a fantastic Austrian restaurant on Bayswater in Kensington, London. The legendary host, Joseph, is the star of the show and would be a one-man band if it wasn't for his yodeling lamb puppets.

Bonus post: now with more videos!

Yes, you read that right. The goat puppet yodels Bavarian hits to the entertainment of a very rowdy (drunk) crowd at London's famed Tiroler Hut. No goat puppets were harmed during the making of this film.

This one is a bit of a train wreck. Proving that you, too, can play cowbell like Joseph, he's taught a couple of audience members how to accompany him.

Boneyard Beach Aerial

Capers Island, South Carolina
January 27, 2016 by Matt Spangard

Take a close look at Boneyard Beach and you will understand where the name comes from. Driftwood is pulled through the nearby channel, and deposited on the protected beach, where it is bleached by the sun amid other "bones" that have washed ashore over the years.

If you're visiting Charleston, call the owners of the Delphinus and charter a sunset tour of Capers Island and Boneyard Beach one evening. You won't be disappointed!

London Falcon

Trafalgar Square, London, England
January 26, 2016 by Matt Spangard

London has long relied on trained falcons to prevent pigeons from overtaking its public squares. Here, a falcon keep vigil atop a lion statue in Trafalgar Square. The guy in the beanie was kind enough to cuddle up with the lion to give you a better idea of the scale of the massive statues.

Burning Sunrise

Beech Mountain, North Carolina
January 25, 2016 by Matt Spangard

Just "another sunrise" on Beech Mountain. I'm not sure what they feed the sky up there but waking up in the highest town east of the Rockies (5506 feet) certainly has its perks where each day begins and ends with a spectacular light show put on by Mother Nature.

This photograph was captured with a Sony NEX-7.
