Elk River Falls are located in Western North Carolina, right along the border of Tennessee. The hike from the parking area is super short but there are a lot of smaller game trails heading off in all directions from the Falls. The sound of the falls make it easy to keep your bearings and find your way back to the river.

This is the Linn Cove Viaduct on the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina. It's truly a structural engineering masterpiece. It's completion in the 1980s marked the official completion of the Blue Ridge Parkway, joining the north portion and the south portion of the Parkway.

When you reach higher altitudes on the Blue Ridge Parkway, the trees are always at battle with the wind. The gnarled, wind-swept trees and low brush often make for natural frames of the mountains behind them. If you can catch it at sunset, you're in for a special treat.

I love it when we can time a drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway at sunset. It's usually pretty quiet up there that late in the day as the tourists go home and it becomes more of a way for people to get from town back home in the mountains. This photograph was captured last Friday and it was getting really cold out, too. It was so peaceful. Everything had a cold blue tint to it until the sky turned a brilliant salmon color.

Charleston's Fort Moultrie sits right on the beach, just outside of Charleston Harbor. I'm not sure what this little building, perched along the edge of the beach, was used for. It was probably a pillbox for observers or the entry to a supply tunnel. I could Google it but I prefer to think it was a brick outhouse with a million dollar view.

These houses line the backside crest of Beech Mountain, just off of Oz Run at Beech Mountain Resort. Imagine waking up each morning to those views... Beech Mountain is such an inspirational place!

The sun, sky and clouds are simply better in the mountains. It's hard to believe these views are just a couple of hours from Charlotte. The mountains in North Carolina seem a lifetime away from the urban sprawl of the city. The population of this photograph is probably a dozen.
If you want to come up and experience it for yourself, check out our mountain chalet, Slopeside.

Watching our cedar tree take on snow was a peaceful start to our day last Saturday.
